Crochet Phone Pouch: The Quick and Trendy Project to Create This Weekend

Do you know that urge to crochet something, right now, without committing to a three-week project? The phone pouch is exactly that. Two to three hours, some left-over yarn, and you get a useful, pretty, and 100% handmade accessory. It's the kind of little project that gives a creative boost between bigger works, or makes a perfect last-minute gift.

And in 2026, crochet pouches are everywhere: worn crossbody with a small chain, slipped into a bag, or hung on the wrist. We show you how to make yours.

Why It's the Ideal Project for Beginners (or to Unwind)

The phone pouch is the basic rectangle of crochet. You cast on stitches, crochet back and forth or in rounds, close, and it's done. No shaping, no complex assembly, no increase calculations. If you know how to make a single crochet, you can make this pouch.

For experienced crocheters, it's also the perfect chance to try a new stitch, unusual yarn, or technique you wouldn't risk on a big project. A bobble stitch? A mosaic motif? Colour changes? On such a small surface, the risk is zero and the enjoyment immediate.

As for budget, plan for €3 to €8 worth of yarn. One skein is more than enough, and it's the perfect project to use up that leftover yarn that's been sitting around for months.

The Materials

The yarn. Cotton is your best ally for a phone pouch. It gives a dense fabric that protects the screen, doesn't pill, and washes easily. In DK or sport weight (crochet hook 3 to 4 mm), you achieve a neat and structured result. The Phil Coton 3 works wonders for this type of project: good hold, wide range of colours, affordable price.

For a more original look, you can also try pearled cotton yarn (slightly shiny effect), fine raffia (summer texture), or even leftover novelty yarn. The essential thing is to achieve a tightly-knit fabric so the phone isn't visible through the stitches.

The hook. Half a millimetre smaller than what's recommended on the yarn label. For DK cotton, go for a hook of 3 to 3.5 mm. The goal is a dense and firm fabric. A loose, floppy pouch won't protect anything.

The rest. Scissors, yarn needle, and a button or magnetic snap for closure. If you want to wear the pouch crossbody, also plan for a small chain, cord or ribbon. Everything is available in our haberdashery.

Taking Measurements

Before starting, measure your phone (with its case if you use one). Note the width and height. Add 1 cm in width and 2 to 3 cm in height so the phone slides in easily and the flap can fold over.

As a rough idea, most current smartphones are around 7.5 × 15.5 cm. Your finished pouch should measure roughly 8.5 × 18 cm (flap included). But the only reliable measurement is yours: each phone and each case is different.

And above all: make a sample swatch. Crochet a 10 × 10 cm square in single crochet with the yarn and hook chosen, measure, and calculate the number of stitches needed. Yes, even for such a small project. A row too many or too few, and the phone won't fit or will float in the pouch.

Step-by-step Pattern

Method 1: Back and Forth (Simplest)

Cast on a chain of stitches corresponding to the width of your pouch (about 15 to 18 stitches in DK cotton with a 3.5 mm hook, but rely on your sample).

Crochet in single crochet, row after row, until you obtain a rectangle whose height is twice the height of the phone + 5 cm for the flap. You'll fold this rectangle in half to form the pouch, and the excess will become the flap that folds over.

Fold the rectangle in half, right sides together, and join the two sides in single crochet or slip stitches. Turn right side out. Done.

Method 2: In the Round (Neater)

Cast on the same chain, but instead of turning, crochet in the round as you would for a bag. The first round runs along one side of the chain, turns at the end (3 stitches in the last), runs along the other side, turns again. You get a flattened tube, without side seams.

Continue in a spiral (with a marker at the start of each round) up to the phone's height. Then continue back and forth on one side to form the flap. This method gives a neater finish and avoids the assembly step.

The Flap and Closure

For the flap, continue for 5 to 6 cm in back and forth. On the last two or three rows, decrease on each side to slightly round the tip, or leave the flap rectangular for a more graphic look.

For the closure, several options. A sewn-on button on the front of the pouch, with a chain loop on the flap. A magnetic snap slipped between two layers of crochet (discreet and practical). Or simply a sufficiently long flap that holds by friction, without a closure system. This last option is the quickest and works well day-to-day.

Add a Strap

The pouch worn crossbody is the most practical version for light outings (market, walk, evening). Three options.

A crocheted chain. Cast a long chain (120 to 130 cm for cross-body wear) and crochet 1 or 2 rows of single crochet over it to thicken. Sew the ends inside the pouch, on each side.

A braided cord. Cut 3 threads of 2 metres, braid them, and attach to both sides of the pouch. Result is thinner and softer than a crocheted chain.

A metal chain. Buy a ready-made bag chain and attach it with two small rings sewn on each side. It's the most 'handbag' version and gives an interesting material contrast with the crochet.

Personalisation Ideas

The phone pouch is the perfect playground for creativity. Some ideas.

Stripes by alternating two or three colours every 2 rows. A simple jacquard pattern (heart, star, initial) by changing colour over a few stitches. Textured stitches (bobble, popcorn, star stitch) for relief. A scalloped or picot border on the flap. Or a little pompom, tassel, or crocheted flower attached to the closure.

It's also a great project to gift. In 2 to 3 hours of work and for a few euros of yarn, you make a personalised gift in the recipient's favourite colours. Hard to be more thoughtful.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to crochet a phone pouch?

Between 2 and 3 hours for a simple single crochet pattern, including the strap. If you add a jacquard or textured stitch, plan for 3 to 4 hours instead. It's a project doable in a single evening.

Which stitch should I choose to ensure the pouch protects the phone well?

Single crochet is the best choice: it creates the densest and most protective fabric. Avoid double crochet or openwork stitches that leave spaces between the stitches. Use a hook slightly smaller than recommended for the yarn to achieve a firm fabric. If you're starting out, our article where to start with crochet explains the basics of single crochet.

Does the crocheted pouch really protect against shocks?

It offers protection against scratches and minor daily impacts (keys in the bag, friction). It's not a shockproof case, but it's more than adequate for transport. For extra protection, line the interior with felt or padded fabric.

How to adapt the template to another phone model?

The pattern adapts to all phones: simply measure yours (with its case) and adjust the number of stitches and rows. The 10 × 10 cm swatch is key: it provides the stitch/cm ratio for calculating the exact dimensions. Always add 1 cm in width so the phone slides in effortlessly.
