Why the Granny Square is Perfect for a Bag

The principle is simple: you crochet lots of small squares separately and then assemble them. You make one on the tube, another in front of your show, a third in the waiting room. Each square takes about twenty minutes, and they accumulate quietly until the day you have enough to build your bag.

Another big advantage is the creative freedom. Each square can have its own style: bright colours, pastels, chic monochrome or a joyful rainbow. You can use up all your leftover yarn or choose a very carefully coordinated palette. And if you mess up a square? You redo it on its own, without touching the rest.

The Material You Need

For yarn, forget about wool for this project: it stretches under the weight and your bag will lose shape. What you need is cotton in DK or sport thickness, to be worked with a crochet hook of 3.5 to 4 mm. Cotton holds its shape, doesn't bobble and gives a neat finish. For a standard bag of 35 × 30 cm (around 20 squares), plan for 250 to 350 g of total yarn. Always buy a little more than planned, nothing more frustrating than being short by 15 grams for the last row.

Add a yarn needle, good scissors, pins, a measuring tape and, ideally, fabric to line the inside. This lining transforms your bag from "nice" to "really usable every day." Find everything you need in our haberdashery.

Start with a magic circle (or 4 chain stitches closed in a round if the magic circle still intimidates you, no judgement).

Round 1 (colour A): in the circle, 3 chain stitches + 2 double crochets, then 2 chain stitches, 3 double crochets three times. Close with a slip stitch. Cut the yarn.

Round 2 (colour B): attach in a corner space. Make (3 double crochets, 2 chain stitches, 3 double crochets) in each corner, with 1 chain stitch between each corner. Close, cut.

Round 3 (colour C): same logic, but add a group of 3 double crochets between corners, in the 1 chain stitch spaces of the previous round. This is what makes the square grow.

Following Rounds: repeat the principle of Round 3. With each round, one more group of double crochets per side. For a bag, aim for 10 to 12 cm per square (4 to 5 rounds). It's the right balance between speed and ease of assembly. If you're new to crochet, our article where to start will help you master the basics.

Tips That Make a Difference

Tension, first. If your squares are not all the same size, assembling will become a puzzle. After your first 3 squares, measure them flat. They must be identical within 2 mm. If not, adjust before continuing.

Blocking, then. Yes, it's tedious. Yes, it's worth it. Wet your squares, pin them to the correct dimensions on a flat surface, check the right angles and let dry for 12 to 24 hours. This step transforms approximate squares into perfectly regular modules.

Colour changes, finally. Leave 10 to 15 cm of yarn at each cut and junction, then crochet over the tails for 3 or 4 stitches to trap them. Result: no hanging tails, no 40 ends to weave in at the end of the project.

Assembling the Squares: The Magic Moment

This is the most satisfying step. Lay all your squares on the floor, play with the colours, find the arrangement you like, and sew.

The simplest method: place two squares right sides together and crochet with single crochets through both layers. It's quick (2 to 3 minutes per join), sturdy, and creates a nice raised line. In contrasting yarn, it's graphic. In matching yarn, it's discreet.

If you prefer invisible joins, sewing with yarn and needle makes the joins disappear, but count double the time. The "join as you go" technique, which assembles as you progress, also offers a very clean result for those who like to plan ahead.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to crochet a granny bag?

For a standard bag (20 squares), it takes between 15 and 20 hours in total, including crocheting the squares, blocking, and assembly. The advantage is that this time naturally breaks down into micro-sessions. Some complete the project in two intensive weeks, others in three months at a relaxed pace.

Is the granny bag durable for daily use?

Yes, provided you use cotton yarn (not wool, which stretches) and add a fabric lining. Cotton retains the structure, the lining protects the contents and distributes the weight. With these two precautions, a well-made granny bag lasts for years.

I'm new to crocheting, is it doable?

Absolutely. The granny square is based on a single stitch, the double crochet, repeated in a loop. After 2 or 3 practice squares, your hands know the movement by heart. This is precisely why this project is so popular among beginners: the pattern is simple, but the result looks intricate.

Can you wash a bag made of granny squares?

Yes. A cotton bag can be machine washed at 30°C in a laundry net, then dried flat to maintain its shape. Avoid tumble drying as it may shrink the stitches. If your bag is lined, check that the fabric can also withstand machine washing.
